What Killed My Chicken? A Predator Forensics Guide for Ontario Coops

You go out at first light and know something's wrong before you even reach the run — feathers scattered across the grass, a gap where a bird used to be, maybe worse. The first question is always "what did this," and the good news is that it's usually answerable. Predators aren't tidy, but they're consistent: what's missing, what's left behind, and when it happened all point toward a fairly short suspect list.

This is a field guide to reading the scene, built around the predators that actually show up at Ontario and cottage-country coops — raccoons, great horned owls, foxes and coyotes, and the weasel family, which up here includes not just weasels proper but mink, fisher, and pine marten.

Start with three questions

Before getting into species-specific detail, three facts about the scene do most of the sorting:

Hold onto those three answers — they do more work than any single clue below.

Head or neck missing, body left behind — raccoon or owl

This is one of the most common scenes, and it's caused by two very different animals. Per University of Maryland Extension's poultry predator guide, raccoons typically leave the carcass in place and go for the "tastiest" parts — the crop, the breast, sometimes the head — and scatter feathers around the kill site. If your coop has welded wire or hardware cloth and the damage is concentrated right at the fence line, that's a strong raccoon signature: they'll reach through, grab whatever's closest, and pull it against the mesh, which is often enough by itself to kill or badly injure the bird on the wrong side of the wire.

Great horned owls tell a different story. Oklahoma State Extension notes owls typically take one or two birds, use their talons to pierce the head, and eat mainly the head and neck — sometimes carrying the rest off, sometimes leaving it. Owls hunt free-range or poorly covered runs at night and don't need a gap in fencing the way ground predators do; if your birds were out from under cover after dark, or your run has no overhead netting, an owl is a real possibility even with intact perimeter fencing.

Quick tell: raccoons usually leave hand-like tracks and may have tried the latch (raccoons are notorious for working simple hook-and-eye closures). Owls leave no ground tracks worth mentioning and no sign of forced entry at all — because they didn't need one.

The bird is just gone — fox or coyote

No carcass, a scatter of feathers, and a hole where a chicken used to be: that's the classic fox or coyote pattern. Both are strong enough to carry a whole bird off to eat elsewhere, which is exactly why so little evidence is left at the scene.

The distinguishing details are mostly in the entry point and the pattern over time. Foxes tend to be patient — several sources describe them "casing" a coop for days before attempting an entry, and when they do get in, it's often through an existing gap rather than by digging or forcing one. Coyotes are more willing to dig under fencing or force their way through weak points, and unlike foxes they can clear surprisingly tall fences — reports of coyotes jumping fences in the five-foot range aren't unusual. If you're missing more than one bird from the same raid, or you find digging at the base of your run, lean coyote. If it's a single bird gone clean over a few nights of near-misses, lean fox.

Several birds killed, most not eaten — weasel, mink, fisher, or marten

This is the scene that upsets people the most, and understandably — a dozen birds dead in a single night, most of them barely touched, looks like senseless slaughter. It isn't, exactly. Wildlife biologists call this surplus killing, and it's a known behavior in the weasel family (mustelids): their hunting response is triggered by movement, and a coop full of panicking, fluttering birds can set off attack after attack before the animal's predatory drive shuts off. The kills are often cached nearby for later, which is part of why so many carcasses are left behind rather than carried off.

Physically, this group can get into places that seem sealed. Weasels can reportedly fit through gaps around an inch wide, so if your coop passed a "can a raccoon get in" check but still got hit, check for smaller gaps — vents, gaps around wiring, warped boards — rather than assuming the whole structure failed. Bite marks concentrated at the neck and head, birds found in a rough pile or line, and a body count that's higher than any other predator would bother with are the signature.

It happened in daylight — hawk or dog

Time of day narrows things fast. Foxes, raccoons, owls, and the weasel family are overwhelmingly nocturnal; if the flock was attacked mid-afternoon while you were watching from the kitchen window, the suspect list shrinks to hawks and dogs (coyotes, less commonly, will hunt in daylight too, particularly where they've adapted to areas with less human activity at night).

Hawks typically eat on site, leaving a heavy scatter of feathers roughly where the bird went down, and will sometimes carry smaller birds to a nearby tree or fence post to finish. Dogs — including a neighbor's, off leash — tend to maul rather than eat, often killing or injuring multiple birds without consuming much of any of them, which is a useful way to rule out a wild predator that was actually hunting for food.

When it's just destruction — bear

This one's less about carcass forensics and more about the coop itself: torn-off doors, flattened fencing, structural damage disproportionate to a few missing birds. Black bears are a real consideration in northern Ontario and cottage country specifically, and the standard prevention advice — a properly maintained electric fence around the coop — is consistently cited by wildlife agencies as the most effective deterrent. If bears are active in your area, that's worth doing regardless of what else you're protecting against.

Forensics only works after the fact

Here's the frustrating part of everything above: it's all after-the-fact detective work. By the time you're reading tracks and counting missing birds, the animal is gone and the damage is done. None of these clues help you the night it's actually happening.
